JACK DELANO
Jack Delano

Jack Delano immigrated to the U.S.A with his family from Ukraine in 1923. After high school, he took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and became interested in photography. He worked for the photography projects of the Works Progress Administration, the United Fund, and the Farm Security Administration in Puerto Rico, the last of which inspired him to settle down there, in Puerto Rico, in 1946, becoming the official photographer for the government of Puerto Rico.

In his photographs, Delano often played with scale to underline the strength of character in his subjects, enlarging some of his prints beyond normal proportions to dramatize his subjects’ presence. His work documents a region through its people and landscape as well as its cultural and social patterns, an attitude which differentiated his work from most other FSA photographers.
